Question
State, how barium chloride solution and lead nitrate solution is used for testing the presence of sulphate ion in sulphuric acid. Write relevant chemical equations.

Answer

(i) Barium chloride solution on treating with dilute sulphuric acid forms a white precipitate of barium sulphate, which is insoluble in all acids.
BaCl2 + H2SO4 → 2HCl + BaSO4 (white ppt.)
(ii) Lead nitrate on treating with dilute sulphuric acid forms a white precipitate of lead sulphate, which is insoluble in all acids.
$Pb \left( NO _3\right)_2+ H _2 SO _4$ (dil.) $\longrightarrow 2 HNO _3+ PbSO _4$
(white ppt.)
