State whether the two lines in the following are parallel, perpendicular or neither.
Through $(9, 5)$ and $(-1, 1)$; through $(3, -5)$ and $(8, -3)$

Answer

Slope of line joining $(-1,1)$ and $(9,5)$
$m_1=\frac{5-1}{9-(-1)}=\frac{4}{10}=\frac{2}{5}$
Slope of line joining ( $3,-5$ ) and ( 9,5 )
$m_2=\frac{-3-(-5)}{8-3}=\frac{-3+5}{5}=\frac{2}{5}$
Here $m _1= m _2$
$\therefore$ The two lines are parallel.
