Question
The figure given below shows an electric circuit in which current flows from a $6V$ battery through two resistors.
  1. Are the resistors connected in series with each other or in parallel?
  2. For each resistor, state the p.d. across it.
  3. The current flowing from the battery is shared between the two resistors. Which resistor will have bigger share of the current?
  4. Calculate the effective resistance of the two resistors.
  5. Calculate the current that flows from the battery.

Answer

$V = 6V, R_1 = 2 ohms, R_2 = 3 ohms$
  1. Resistor are connected in parallel.
  2. p.d. across each resistor is same and is equal to 6V.
  3. 2 ohms resistance have bigger share of current because of its lower resistance.
  4. Effective resistance = $R$
$\frac{1}{\text{R}}=\frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}{3}$

$\frac{1}{\text{R}}=\frac{5}{6}$

$R = 1.2\ ohms.$
  1. Current flowing through battery, $\text{I}=\frac{\text{V}}{\text{R}}=\frac{6}{1.2}=5\ \text{amps}.$
