Question
What are co-ordination compounds ? Mention the differences between complex compounds and double salts.

Answer

Co-ordination compounds are those compounds in which centeral metal atom is linked to a number of ions or natural molecules by co-ordination bond.
Differences between Double Salts and Complex Compounds
Double SaltsComplex Compounds
1. They usually contain two simple salts in equimolar proportions.1. The simple salts from which they are formed may or may not be in equimolar proportions.
2. They exist only in the solid state. In aqueous solution, they dissociate completely into ions2. They exist in the solid state as well as in aqueous solution. This is because even in the solution, the complex ion does not dissociate into ions.
3. They are ionic compounds and do not contain any coordinate bond.3. They may or may not be ionic but the complex part always contains coordinate bonds.
4. The properties of the double salt are same as those of its constituent compounds.4. The properties of the co-ordination compound are different from its consti-tuents.
5. A double salt loses its iden-tification in the solution5. A coordination compound (complex) retains its identification in the solution.
