Question
What are histones? What are their functions?

Answer

Histones are lysine and arginine rich basic proteins involved in DNA packing in eukaryotes. There are five types of histone proteins $-H, H_2 A, H_2 B, H_3$ and $H_4$. Four of them $\left(H_2 A, H_2 B, H_3\right.$ and $\left.H_4\right)$ occur in pairs to produce histone octamer, called nu body or core of nucleosome. Being positively charged (due to basic amino acids) they attract negatively charged strands of DNA.
