Question
What are hydrocarbons? Explain with examples.

Answer

A compound made up of hydrogen and carbon only is called a hydrocarbon (Hydrogen + Carbon $=$ Hydrocarbon).
For exampe: methane $\left( CH _4\right)$, ethane $\left( C _2 H _6\right)$, ethene $\left( C _2 H _4\right)$, and ethyne $\left( C _2 H _2\right)$, all are hydrocarbons as they are made up of only two elements: carbon and hydrogen.
