Question
What are the physical properties of ozone?

Answer

The physical properties of ozone are as follows :
  • Gaseous ozone is blue, liquid ozone is dark blue and solid ozone is violet-black.
  • It has a pungent odour hence the name is ozone.
  • At higher concentrations (about 100 ppm), it is harmful and results into nausea and headache while in small concentrations it is harmless.
  • Ozone is thermodynamically less stable than oxygen.
  • The decomposition of ozone $\left(2 O _3 \rightarrow 3 O _2\right)$ is exothermic $(\Delta H < O )$ and has $\Delta S >0$.Z
  • Therefore $\Delta G<0$ and hence decomposition of $O _3$ is spontaneous.
  • Ozone is diamagnetic in nature.
