Question
What chemical process is used for obtaining a metal from its oxide?

Answer

(1) The oxide of low reactive metals, on heating forms metal by reduction (or self- reduction) reaction.
For example, $2 HgO ( s ) \xrightarrow{\text { Heat }} 2 Hg ( l )+ O _2(g)$
(2) The oxides of moderate reactive metals are reduced by carbon to metal.
For example, $ZnO ( s )+ C ( s ) \xrightarrow{\text { Heat }} Zn ( s )+ CO ( g )$
(3) The metals from oxide of highly reactive metals are obtained by electrolytic reduction process.
For example, when the electrolysis of molten Al2O3 solution is carried out. then, aluminium metal is obtained at cathode.
