Question
What do you understand by IUD? Write its various types and also describe the non-medicated IUD.

Answer

The second effective and popular method of contraception in India are the use of intrauterine devices. These devices are inserted by doctors or expert nurses in the uterus through vagina. These intrauterine devices are presently available as the non medicated IUDs e.g. Lippes loop, copper releasing IUD (CuT, Cu-7, multiload 375) and the hormone releasing IUDs (Plogstasert, LNG20). IUDs increase of phagocytosis of sperm within the uterus and the copper ion released supress sperms motility and the fertilizing capacity of sperms. The hormone releasing IUDs in addition make the uterus unsuitable for implantation and the cervix hostile to the sperms. IUDs are ideal contraceptive for the female who want to delay pregnancy and or space children.
