Ozone depletion refers to the phenomenon of reduction in the amount of ozone in the stratosphere.
  1. It is caused by the high levels of chlorine and bromine compounds in the stratosphere.
  2. On account of depletion of the ozone layer more ultraviolet (UV) radiation comes to earth and causes damage to living organisms. This radiation is said to be responsible for skin cancer in humans.
  3. It also lowers production of phytoplankton which affects other aquatic organisms.
