What do you understand by photoperiodism and vernalisation? Describe their significance.

  1. Photoperiodism: The effect of photoperiods or daily duration of light hours on the growth and development of plants, especially flowering, is called photoperiodism.
Significance of photoperiodism:
  1. Photoperiodism determines the season in which a particular plant shall come to flower.
  2. A plant can be made to flower throughout the year under green house conditions if a favourable photoperiod is being provided to it
  1. Vernalisation: Vernalisation is a process of hastening flowering by a previous cold treatment.
Significance of vernalisation:
  1. It can help in shortening the juvenile or vegetative period of plants and bring about early flowering.
  2. It increases yield and resistance to cold and diseases.
