Question
What effect does crossing over have on inheritance? Explain briefly.

Answer

Crossing over i.e. exchange has a great impact on inheritance. Crossing over occurs in the diplotene phase of the first mitotic division in which exchange of chromatid material takes place between homologous i.e. paired chromosomes, because of which hereditary variations arise in the offspring due to innumerable types of combinations of the characteristics of the parents. Genetic variations are closely related to the evolution of animals.
