Question
What is a Stereotype?
✓
Answer
Stereotype is a cluster of idea regarding the characteristics of a specific group.
Stereotypes provide fertile ground for the growth of prejudice against specific group but prejudices can also develop without stereotypes.
Stereotypes are often applied to ethnic and racial groups e.g., to women.
Most of the stereotypes in India are colonial creations e.g., some communities are characterised as a 'martial race's, some others as effeminate or cowardly, yet other as untrustworthy.
Stereotypes fix whole groups into single, homogenous categories, they refuse to recognise the variations across individual and across contexts or across time. They treat the entire community as though it were a single person with a single characteristics.
