Question
What is bagging technique? How is it useful in a plant breeding programme?
✓
Answer
Bagging technique is a process of covering the emasculated flowers with a bag of suitable size, generally made up of butter paper to prevent contamination of its stigma with unwanted pollen. When the stigma of bagged flower attains receptivity. it is dusted by mature pollen grains collected from anthers of male plant and the flowers are rebagged to develop as fruit. Plant breeders can use bagging technique to dust the desired pollen on stigma of bagged flower, when it becomes receptive to incorporate desired characters in that plant during plant breeding programme.
