Question
What is corpus luteum? Under what conditions does it undergo degeneration?

Answer

In the ovary, after ovulation, the remaining parts of ruptured Graafian follicle transform as corpus-luteum. It is a glandular structure which secretes progesterone hormone. In the absence of fertilization, the corpus luteum degenerates as the level of gonadotropins decreases.
