Double Circulation: Passing of blood twice through the heart in one cycle for the first time, all impure blood from the body is collected in the right atrium of the heart and passes through the right ventricle to the lungs, and for the second time, pure blood collected from the lungs through the pulmonary veins is pumped to the entire body through the aorta by the left ventricle of the heart. Such circulation of blood is termed double circulation.
Significance:
(i) Pure (Oxygenated) and impure (Deoxygenated) blood do not mix with each other.
(ii) It maintains a uniform body temperature.
(iii) It creates increased pressure in the systemic circulation, making it easier to pump blood throughout the body.
(iv) Due to this, there is no need for the renal portal system.
