What is pipeline transportation? Write two merits and demerits of the same.

Answer

Pipeline transport is the long-distance transportation of a liquid or gas through a system of pipes.
Merits:
  1. These are used for transporting crude oil, petroleum products and natural gas from oil and natural gas fields to refineries.
  2. Solids can also be transported through a pipeline when converted into slurry.
  3. It rules out trans-shipment losses or delays.
Demerits:
  1. Soil pollution occurs due to the leakage in pipe or damage to the pipelines and contaminate groundwater and polluting the environment.
  2. Initial costs of laying tubular underground pipes carrying liquid and gases are very high.
