  • (1) Privileges given to nobility or clergy or certain castes/classes in the earlier times were regarded as contrary to equality.
  • (2) However, to establish an ‘Egalitarian Society) and to improve the lot of the weaker sections, special provisions have been made within the Right to Equality to enable the state/government to take steps to promote their advancement
  • (3)The state/government is given powers to make reservation of seats for the SCs, the STs and the OBCs in public employment and institutions of higher education.
  • (4) A number of concessions such as relaxation in age limit and educational qualifications, freeships and scholarship are also provided.
  • (5) Special provisions have been made to improve the conditions of women, for the welfare of children and disabled persons.
  • (6) Positive discrimination is a hallmark of the welfare state.
