Question
What is specific conductance or conductivity?
✓
Answer
The reciprocal of specific resistance or resistivity is called specific conductance or conductivity. If $\rho$ is the resistivity then, $\text { conductivity }=\frac{1}{\text { resistivity }}=\frac{1}{\rho}$ Conductivity is denoted by $k$ (kappa), where $k =\frac{1}{\rho}$ It is the conductance of a conductor that is $1 m$ in length and $1 m ^2$ in cross section area in SI units. (In C.G.S. units, it is the resistance of a conductor that is $1 cm$ in length and $1 cm ^2$ in cross section area.) It is the conductance of a conductor of volume $1 m ^3$ (or in C.G.S. units, the volume of $1 cm ^3$ ).
