✓
Answer
Multiple Ovulation Embryo Transfer Technology (MOET): It is a programme employed for the herd improvement. A herd is a group of animals that live together or are kept together as livestock like cattle, sheep, rabbit, buffaloes, mares, etc. Procedure: The high milk yielding breeds of females have been bred with high quality (lean meat with less lipid) meat yielding bulls to increase herd size in much lesser time. The steps taken in this method are:
A cow is given Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) to induce follicular maturation. This cow is now called genetic mother.
The follicular maturation results in superovulation, i.e. 6-8 eggs are produced per cycle instead of a single.
This cow is now mated with a superior bull having desirable characters or the semen of the bull is collected and artificially inseminated into the reproductive tract of the cow.
After fertilisation, when the eggs become 8-32 celled, each egg is transferred non-surgically into a surrogate mother, to give superior progeny.
The genetic mother can be again induced for superovulation to continue the process.
