Question
What is the difference between extensive and intensive properties? Explain.

Answer

Extensive properties : These are those properties whose value depends on amount and shape of the substance present in the system. Example : Mass, volume, interval energy, enthalpy, heat capacity etc.
Intensive properties : Those properties which do not depend on the quantity and shape of the matter present in system but depend on nature of matter are called intensive properties. Example : Temperature, density, pressure etc. When matter is present in unit quantity, the extensive properties become intensive. That is ratio of two extensive properties is an intensive property, like mass and volume are extensive properties but ratio (density) of these two is an intensive property.
