Question
What is the nature of electromagnetic waves?

Answer

It is a three-dimensional wave which is emitted by an oscillating electric circuit in which electric field and magnetic field oscillate perpendicularly. These waves do not require any material medium for their propagation and they can travel through vacuum also. Hence, they are different from mechanical waves. They travel with maximum speed in vacuum which is equal to the speed of the light. These waves are transverse in nature and the properties of the medium remain unchanged through which they travel.

Consider a head-on collision between two particles of masses $m_1$ and $m_2$. The initial speeds of the particles are $u_1$ and $u_2$ in the same direction. The collision starts 2 at t = 0 and the particles interact for a time interval $\triangle\text{t}.$ During the collision, the speed of the first particle varies as.$\text{v}(\text{t})=\text{u}_1+\frac{\text{t}}{\triangle\text{t}}(\text{v}_1-\text{u}_1).$
Find the speed of the second particle as a function of time during the collision.

Using $\text{B}=\mu_0\text{H},$ find the ratio $\frac{\text{E}_0}{\text{H}_0}$ for a plane electromagnetic wave propagating through vacuum. Show that it has the dimensions of electric resistance. This ratio is a universal constant called the impedance of free space.
Two concentric circular coils X and Y of radii 16 cm and 10 cm, respectively, lie in the same vertical plane containing the north to south direction. Coil X has 20 turns and carries a current of 16 A; coil Y has 25 turns and carries a current of 18 A. The sense of the current in X is anticlockwise, and clockwise in Y, for an observer looking at the coils facing west. Give the magnitude and direction of the net magnetic field due to the coils at their centre.
