Question
What is the strategy for poverty eradication?
✓
Answer
After independence the government has adopted many strategies for eradication of poverty:
Encouragement to large and heavy industries and encouraging Green Revolution in agriculture to create opportunities for employment. The Government thus would benefit both the rich and the poor but the expected decrease in poverty could not be met due to the slower economic development and unequal distribution of income.
To bring down the quantum of unequal distribution of income in the rural area, the government undertook eradication of Zamindari system, implementations of Tenancy Act for tenants so that they would not lose their land, Land Ceiling Act and distribution of surplus land to landless farmers and rent control.
Government has encouraged agro-based industries like dairy industry, small and large irrigation planning, cottage industries and small scale industries which require less use of machines so that employment opportunities are increased.
Government has conducted various programmes so that the gap between the rich and the poor can be bridged. High taxes were put on the luxurious commodities used by rich people and on means of entertainment.
Government introduced public distribution of goods at lower rate so that the poor benefit from them.
The government has started vocational training courses for the poor. It has also started programmes iike education, health, housing, family planning, telecommunication, roads, irrigation and vocational skills.
