Question
What knowledge was enhanced by the discovery of the Emerson effect? Tell.
✓
Answer
From the discovery of Emerson effect, it became known that two light systems or pigment systems are used in photosynthesis. These two pigment systems are called PS-I and PS-II. Pigment System (PS-I) contains 300 chlorophyll molecules, 50 carotenoids, one $P _{700}$ molecule, Cyt. f, one plastocyanin, two Cyt. b6, FRS and one or two membrane bound ferredoxin molecules. It contains Chl . a, iron and copper are also there. PS-I is used in cyclic and non-cyclic photophosphatation. Pigment System-II (PS-II) contains 200 chlorophyll, 50 carotenoids, one molecule of $P _{680}$, one primary receptor, plastoquinone, Mn molecule, two Cyt. b, one Cyt. $b _6$ and fluorides are found. $O _2$ is produced by the pigmentation system with a powerful oxidant and a weak reducing agent. Pigment system-I (PSI) is found on the outer surface of the thylakoid and PSII is found on the inner surface of the thylakoid.
