The Constitution: It is the root of the democratic system of India as it mandates that governance in India is to be conducted democratically.
Parliament and State Legislatures: They hold the central and state governments (the executve) responsible to elected represenatives of the people. They, therefore, ensure that governance in India is carried out according to the will of the people.
The Supreme Court: It acts as the guardian of the Constitution and ensures that the legislature and the executive cannot carry out any action in violation of the democratic spirit of the Constitution.
The Election Commission: It ensures that elections, which are indispensable for a democracy, are held at regular intervals in a free and fair manner.
The Press and Electronic Media: It hold the government to account by creating public opinion for and against various policies.
