Chipko Andolan began in two or three villages of Uttrakhand (now Uttranchal) when the Forest department refused permission to the villagers to fell ash trees. The department, however, allowed the same patch of land to a sports manufacturer for commercial use. The struggle soon spread around. The villagers insisted that no forest exploiting contracts should be given to outsiders. Women of the area actively participated in this agitation.
