Like the cave caves, the chaityas were carved out of the mountain; the caves were simple and were used as a residence and study for Buddhist monks. The cave was shaped like a temple by carving pillars, doors, huge prayer pavilions etc. in the chaityas. It was also used as a prayer house. Its pillars are elaborately carved.
