Representative republic. There is a bicameral legislatire at the federal level with a lower house and a senate. They are elected by popular vote every 3 and 6 years respectively. The president is elected every 6 years by popular vote. All states and the federal government have 3 branches of government, being executive, legislative, and judicial. No judge is elected. The president is both head of state and of government. There are 3 levels of government:
Federal, state and local. There is a federal constitution and each state has one. Cities are not incorporated. Local power is vested in municipios, which are like our counties in the US.
