The British who came to India were the first ones to organize basic education in India They started imparting Western-style education India. The first educational institution in India was established by William Carey in Sirampur near Kolkata in $1789\ AD.$ Sanskrit, Bengal Marathi, Hindi, the Ramayana, grammar, etc were taught in this educational institution. It was in Sirampur that Marshman and his wife set up a girls' school. The Charter of $1813$ allowed the Christian clergy to establish educationa institutions in India. Thus, the British associated with missionary work set up the first institution for basic education in India.
