Question
Why does apoplast pathway occur in the root cortex but not in endodermis?

Answer

The cortical cells are loosely arranged and offer no resistance to water movement; so water moves via apoplast. In the endodermis, the casparian strip is present; it is composed of suberin and is impervious to water. So, water moves through the regions that are not suberised into cells crossing the membrane; so water moves via symplast to cross membranes and enter xylem vessels.
