Why does meiosis and mitosis occur in germ cells?
Download our app for free and get startedPlay store
Meiosis or reductional division occurs in germ cells in order to produce haploid gametes. Gametes cannot function on their own and they have to fuse again to form a diploid (2n) zygote which eventually gives rise to the offspring. So, if the germ cells are diploid, the chromosome numbers will keep on increasing in the successive generations. Mitosis occurs to produce large no of germ mother cells
