Why does the rainfall decrease in north India while going from east to west?

  • $(1)$ Mostly the Bay of Bengal Current of the south-west monsoon winds bring rain to northern India. Most of the moisture in these winds falls in the form of rain in the high mountains of Meghalaya, Assam and West Bengal.
  • $(2)$ Due to these hills, one Current of these winds deflects towards west and gives rain on its way as it advances. That is why the rainfall decreases in north India while going from east to west.
