Question
Why is ammonia basic in aqueous solution?
✓
Answer
i. As ammonia is highly soluble in water, it readily forms $OH ^{-}$ions in its aqueous solution. $ NH _{3( g )}+ H _2 O _{(l)} \rightleftharpoons NH _{4( aq )}^{+}+ OH _{(a q)}^{-} $ ii. Thus, due to the formation of $OH ^{-}$ions, aqueous solution of ammonia is basic in nature.
