National Emergency was declared on June 25, 1975 because:-
  1. Allahabad High Court declared Indira Gandhi's election to Lok Sabha invalid on12 June, 1975 on the basis of using governmental machinery for election campaign.
  2. On June 24, Supreme Court granted her partial stay till her appeal was decided.
  3. Jayaparkash Narayan organised a massive nationwide demonstration to press for Indira's resignation on 25th June 1975.
  4. There was an undercurrent threat to bring the government to a stand still.
Consequencesof Emergency:-
  1. Strikes were banned.
  2. Political leaders were jailed.
  3. Freedom of speech was suspended.
  4. Press censorship was imposed, members had to get prior permission for all material to be published.
  5. R.S.S. and Jamait-elslami were banned.
  6. Many Fundamental Rights were suspended.
  7. Preventive detention was used extensively.

The conflict of 1962, in which India suffered military reverses, had long-term implications for India-China relations. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were downgraded until 1976. Thereafter, relations between the two countries began to improve slowly. After the change in China's political leadership from the mid to late 1970s, China's policy became more pragmatic and less ideological.
