In $1922\ AD$ when police opened fire on a peaceful procession of farmers in Chauri-Chaura village near Gorakhpur in Uttar the angry mob attacked the police station and set it on fire in which $22$ policemen died. Mahatma Gandhi believed in non-violent satyagraha. On getting the news of the incident, a saddened Gandhi announced the postponement of the 'non-cooperation' movement.
