Question
With the help of suitable diagram describe nitrogen cycle.

Answer

Nitrogen Cycle:
  1. Plants compete with microbes for the limited nitrogen that is available in soil Thus, nitrogen is a limiting nutrient for both natural and agricultural eco systems.
  2. In nature, lightning and ultraviolet radiation provide enough energy to convert nitrogen to nitrogen oxides $\left(\mathrm{NO}, \mathrm{NO}_2, \mathrm{~N}_2 \mathrm{O}\right)$.
  3. Industrial combustions, forest fires, automobile exhausts and power-generating stations are also sources of atmospheric nitrogen oxides.
  4. Decomposition of organic nitrogen of dead plants and animals into ammonia is called ammonification. Some of this ammonia volatilises and re-enters the atmosphere but most of it is converted into nitrate by soil bacteria in the following steps:
$2\text{NH}_3+3\text{O}_2\xrightarrow{ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ }2\text{NO}_2^{-}+2\text{H}^++2\text{H}_2\text{O}$
$2\text{NH}_3+3\text{O}_2\xrightarrow{ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ }2\text{NO}_2^{-}$
$2\text{NO}_2+\text{O}_2\xrightarrow{ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ }2\text{NO}^-_3$
