The Elephanta caves are situated in the Arabian Sea, $10\ km$ away on the North Eastern side of the Gateway of India in Mumbai.
There is a huge stone monument of an elephant on the island when the Portuguese landed for the First time, they named the island ‘Elephanta'. The local fishermen call it ‘Dharapuri’.
Out of all the caves of Elephanta, Cave $No. 1$ is grand. It has an idol of Trimurti depicting the three different forms of Gods Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh.
One can visit this island by motorboat.
It is one of the $17$ heritage sites selected by $UNESCO$ from the $5000$ ancient monuments in India.
