$APJ$ Kalam was born into a middle-class Tamil family in the island town of Rameswaram in the former Madras State.
He was a short boy with undistinguished looks though his parents were tall and handsome.
He inherited honesty and self-discipline from his father and faith in goodness and deep kindness from his mother.
During the Second World War there was a demand for tamarind seeds and he used to collect them and sell them to a provision shop on Mosque Street for one anna.
His first job was distributing newspapers with his cousin Samsuddin.
His science teacher Sivasubramania Iyer encouraged him to be on par with the highly educated people of the big cities.
He left Rameswaram and went for further studies.
