Mahapadmananda came to the throne of Magadha after killing Kakavarnin, the last king of the Shishunaga dynasty.
  • Mahapadma Anand founded the Nand dynasty from his own name.
  • Many opinions prevail for his pre-life.
  • According to the poet Banabhatta's Harshacharita, he killed Kakavarnin Shishunag by stabbing him in the throat.
  • Pretending to be the protector of Kakvarnan's ten sons, he assassinated them and sat on the throne.
  • According to Jain mythology, he was a barber and a lover of Kakvarnin's queen.
  • According to the Puranas, he was the son of the last Shishunaga king Mahanandi, born of a Shudra woman.
