The origins of the Chipko movement:
Chipko is a mountain word.
Which means stick.
In the mountainous tribal areas of north-east India, the government banned locals from cutting down forest products or trees for their livelihood and allowed private companies to cut down trees.
Against which the local tribesmen started a movement.
The form of the sticky movement:
The women of the North-East gathered under the leadership of a woman named Gauridevi.
Chipko started the movement.
As part of the agitation, the protesters organized and decided not to allow private companies to cut down a single tree.
For this one person will stand by bathing / clinging to the tree.
If a tree is to be cut down, one has to cut it down first.
Others also joined this firm Satyagraha.
As a result Gramswaraj and Sahakari Mandali were formed.
It was decided to administer forest produce in the form of community, to protect / preserve the forest resources.
Impact of the Chipko movement:
Due to the effectiveness of this movement, the government had to decide not to cut down a single tree in an area of 1050 sq km for 10 years.
