India has two archipelagos: (1) Laksha-dweep Islands and (2) Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Both these archipelagos are formed in different ways.
Lakshadweep Islands are located at about 280 to 480 km away from Kerala in Arabian Sea. This archipelago is formed of many small islands of coral deposits. Most of them have an ox-bow shape. Such coral islands are called Atolls. There are a total of 27 islands in Lakshadweep out of which 11 are inhabited. → → Andaman and Nicobar Islands are located at about 1200 km away equally from Chennai and Kolkata in the Bay of Bengal. These islands are bigger, are more in number and are spread in much wider area than the Lakshadweep Islands. Out of 572 islands, there is habitation on 25 islands of Andaman group and on 13 islands of Nicobar group of islands. Other islands are barren.
→ These islands are peaks of the submerged mountains system. Some of them have volcanic origin. Some islands are about 60 to 100 km long Nicobar Islands are spread over 350 km.
