Aliphatic (or) aromatic primary amines react with chloroform and alcoholic KOH to give isocyanides (carbylamines), which have an unpleasant smell. This reaction is known as the carbylamines test. This test is used to identify the primary amines.
$C _2 H _5- NH _2+ CHCl _3+3 KOH \longrightarrow C _2 H _5- NC +3 KCl +3 H _2 O$
