  1. The Sufis started to organise commu nities around the hospice. They were controlled by a Shaikh, pir or murshi.
  2. The Shaikh enrolled disciples and appointed a successor. He established rules for spiritual conduct and interaction among inmates, laypersons and the master.
  3. The Chishti khanqah was the centre of social life. The khanqah organised a langar all day run on futuh. People from all walks of life used to come. They sought the discussion with the Shaikh in several matters. Amir Hasan, Amir Khusrau, etc. were the visitors.
  4. Several practices as bowing before the Shaikh, that was based on contemporary traditions were adopted. The piety of the Shaikh drew large followers.
