Bismillah Khan was born in a family of well-known musicians.
As a five year old boy he played gilli-danda near a pond in the ancient estate of Dumraon in Bihar.
He would also go to the Bihariji Temple to sing the Bhojpuri Chaita' and he would earn a big laddu weighing $1.25$ kg as a prize from the local Maharaj.
At the age of three he was fascinated to see his uncles practise the shehnai and he started taking lesson to play it.
