(a) Ethyl alcohol $\left( C _2 H _5 OH \right)$ gives positive iodoform test. Yellow precipitate of iodoform is obtained when $C _2 H _5 OH$ is treated with $I _2$ and NaOH while $CH _3 OH$ does not give iodoform test.
(b) When hot Cu wire is dipped in $CH _3 OH$, formaldehyde with characteristic pungent smell is obtained, $C _2 H _5 OH$ does not give formaldehyde.
