Question
Write structural formula of the alcohol that results when acetaldehyde is reacted with $CH_3MgBr$ in the presence of dry ether and the product is hydrolysed.

Answer

The structural formula of the alcohol that results when
acetaldehyde is reacted with $CH,MgBr$ in the presence of
dry ether and the product is hydrolysed is $CH3-CHOH-CH3$
The reaction involves two steps :
$1)$ Reaction of Grignard reagent $CH3MgBr$ with Acetaldehyde
$2)$ This leads to breakage of double bond of carbonyl $C$ and Oxygen.
It forms an adduct $CH3CCH3H+O-MgBr.$
This adduct is now hydrolysed , so the bond between $O-$ and $MgBr$ breakes to form an alcohol and an $MgOHBr.$
Thus the overall reaction leads to formation of Propane$-2-ol$ and $MgOHBr.$
