Difference between first meiosis and second meiosis: First Meiotic Division 1. It is also called heterotypic division or reduction division. 2. Its prophase is long and it consists of leptotene, zygotene, pachytene, diplotene and diakinesis stages. 3. In this, events like pairing of homologous chromosomes, crossing over, chiasmata and terminalisation take place. 4. Before this there is interphase ($G_{1}$, S. $G_{2}$). 5. The number of chromosomes in the two daughter cells formed after division is half that of the mother cell. Second Meiotic Division 1. It is also called homotypic division or equational division. 2. These conditions do not exist in the prophase. 3. These events does not takes place. 4. No interphase. 5. The number of chromosomes remains the same.
