Q 33Unseen para [7M]7 Marks
The monsoon is essentially the seasonal reversal in wind direction. It causes most of the rainfall received in India and some other parts of the world. The primary cause of monsoons is the difference between annual temperature trends over land and sea. The apparent position of the Sun with reference to the Earth oscillates from the Tropic of Cancer to the Tropic of Capricorn. Thus the low-pressure region created by solar heating also changes latitudes. The northeast and southeast trade winds converge in this low-pressure zone, which is also known as the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone or ITCZ. This low-pressure region sees continuous rise of moist wind from the sea surface to the upper layers of the atmosphere, where the cooling means the air can no longer hold so much moisture resulting in precipitation.
i. What causes the monsoon?
ii. What changes the latitude?
iii. What is the ITCZ?
iv. What causes precipitation?

Q 34Unseen para [7M]7 Marks
Garbage is a great environmental hazard. It comes from various sources-used paper, tiffin packings, plastic bags, ice-cream wrappers, bottle caps, fallen leaves from trees and many more. Garbage makes the premises ugly, unkempt and breeds diseases. A lot of trash that is thrown away contain material that can be recycled and reused such as paper, metals and glass which can be sent to the nearest recycling centre or disposed of to the junk dealer. It also contains organic matter such as leaves which can enrich soil fertility. A compost pit can be made at a convenient location where the refuse can be placed with layers of soil and an occasional sprinkling of water. This would help decomposition to make valuable fertilizer. This would also prevent pollution that is usually caused by burning such organic waste.
i. What happens to the disposed material at the recycling centre?
ii. Where does garbage come from?
iii. Where should a compost pit be made?
iv. How would pollution be prevented?

Abraham Lincoln, who became the 16th President of the USA, was an extraordinary man. His remarkable achievement was his astute leadership in the American Civil War. As President, he was responsible for many enactments of far-reaching political and social consequences. He explored the true nature of democracy, and, therefore, fought valiantly for the suppressed people. Conscientious and sensitive, Lincoln opposed slavery. His liberal policies, however, did not find favour with the racist people. He was unfortunately assassinated in 1885.
i. Why was Lincoln called an extraordinary man?
ii. What was his achievement in the American Civil War?

Trees are the kindest things I know,
They do no harm, they simply grow
And spread a shade for sleepy cows.
And gather birds among the boughs.
They are the first when the day's begin
To touch the morning sun,
They are the last to hold the light
When evening changes into night.
And when the moon floats on the sky
They hum a drowsy lullaby
Of sleepy children long ago..
