Explain why sliding friction is less than static friction.
Answer
Friction comes into play when irregularities present in the surfaces of two objects in contact get interlocked with each other. In sliding, the time given for interlocking is very small. Hence, interlocking is not strong. Therefore, less force is required to overcome this interlocking. Because of this reason, sliding friction is less than static friction.

Force of friction arises because of the interlocking of irregularities of the two surfaces in contact. When a heavy object is placed on the floor, the interlocking of irregularities on the surfaces of box and floor becomes strong. This is because the two surfaces in contact are pressed harder. Hence, more force is required to overcome the interlocking. Thus, to push the heavier box, Seema has to apply a greater force than Iqbal who has to push a lighter box. Concept insight: It is difficult to push a heavier object because friction increases with the weight of object. In case of a heavier object, interlocking becomes stronger.

Answer
Drag is also called air friction or fluid friction. It is experienced by all the objects moving. Fluid friction is experienced by all the objects moving in a medium generally liquid(water) is the medium, higher the viscosity higher is the drag offered by the medium. Drag forces depend upon velocity of the object moving through medium. Objects moving in fluids have streamline shape because this shape reduces the amount of friction experienced by the objects because this shape enables the object to cut and pass through the medium whether it is air or water, the streamline shape is like the shape of bullet it is pointed from forward so that it can cut the medium in front of it and can get pass through it. Examples: Ship in water, Airplane in air, $F1$ cars on road these all have streamline shapes.

Answer
To reduce friction following methods are commonly used:
Polishing: If we polish a surface, it becomes smooth and friction is reduced. Through polishing, unevenness of the surfaces is reduced.
Lubricating: By applying lubricants $($like oil$)$ to surfaces, friction is reduced. When we apply lubricant to surfaces, a thin layer of lubricant is formed over there and moving surfaces do not directly rub against each other.
Using ball bearings: This way of reducing friction involves the principle that an object is rolled instead of sliding. The use of ball bearing converts sliding friction into rolling friction.
Separation of surfaces by air: Another way of reducing friction is to separate the surfaces by air. This is how, a hovercraft works. A hovercraft moves on a layer of air between its hull and the water. The layer of air reduces friction allowing the hovercraft to move easily.
Giving a streamlined shape: Boats, cars, planes and rockets are streamlined to reduce friction with water or air.
