When there is very less or no rain. rivers and streams dry up and the level of wells goes very deep. There is water scarcity and a situation of drought arises. Since enough grain and fodder are not available, human beings and animals suffer from starvation that can even lead to death.

When there is too much rain, rivers get flooded. Rivers and streams overflow and water spreads all over the low-lying areas around. Houses and everything inside them is washed away due the huge volume and force of flood water. People's houses are destroyed. People lose their lives and property. There is scarcity of grains. There is a lot of financial loss. Such a situation is known as 'flood'.

Due to heat of the sun in summer, water from lakes, oceans and seas becomes hot and changes into vapour. Since vapour is very light, it rises high. Fine dust particles in the air combine with vapour to form water droplets. This collection of water droplets is known as clouds.
Clouds move from one place to another due to wind. Clouds continue to cool and become large in the cooling temperatures. When the water droplets become big and heavy, they come down to earth in the form of rain.

When clouds cool down, water droplets are formed within them. When these droplets come down to earth, we call it rain. Thus, water that leaves the earth in the form of vapour comes down again. This cyclic exchange is known as the 'Water Cycle'.

Rain provides us with water to drink, use and water our fields. We can grow crops and other produce like vegetables only if it rains. Water collects in rivers, lakes and wells due to rain, so that we get water the whole year round.
